Exploring the Rocky Mountains is an amazing experience that should be on everyones bucket list. But did you know that you can explore the Rockies by rail?! Whether you want to see the Canadian Rockies or the Rockies of the Southern United States, there’s a rail journey that fits your needs.
Discover Three Unique Canadian Rocky Routes with Rocky Mountaineer
Whether you like history, wildlife, incredible vistas, or maybe all three, Rocky Mountaineer has the perfect route for you. Every Rocky Mountaineer rail journey travels by daylight only so you can be sure that you’re not missing a moment of those landscapes that you’ve come to see. You’ll enjoy regionally-inspired cuisine paired with local wine and craft beers, and relax as you recline in plush seats while learning about the history of the region.
First Passage to the West
This is a two-day route that explores the historic tracks of the Canada’s first coast-to-coast railway between Vancouver and Banff or Lake Louise. You’ll pass by the raging rapids of Hell’s Gate, the twin rail bridges of Cisco Crossing, historic Craigellachie -the site of the “last spike” driven into the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885 – and experience the engineering marvel of the Spiral Tunnels. As you travel through Banff National Park, you’ll be in awe of towering views of snow-capped Castle Mountain and Mount Rundle.

You can stay in the idyllic mountain towns of Banff or Lake Louise, nestled amongst alpine forests and jewel-hued lakes. In Banff, explore the shops, museums, and restaurants, or wander along picturesque trails and admire the ever-present Cascade Mountain. Located 40-minutes northwest of Banff, you can stay at the historic Fairmont Chateau on Lake Louise and discover a landscape you’ve only ever dreamed of.
Journey through the Clouds
For an experience off the beaten track, this two-day route travels between Vancouver and Jasper and traverses some of the most remote landscapes in Canada. With land and wildlife largely untouched by humans, you’ll travel alongside the mighty Fraser River and through scenic valleys carved out by millennia.
You’ll pass the rushing Hell’s Gate – named for explorer Simon Fraser’s assertion that “surely these are the gates of Hell” – and Cisco Crossing. Between Kamloops and Jasper, the train passes the glacier fed, three-tiered Pyramid Falls, as well as Mount Albreda and Mount Robson – the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies at 3,954 metres (12,972 feet). Mount Robson is so large that it often forms its own weather patterns, with clouds enveloping the peak while the rest of the sky is blue.
Jasper National Park is also a Dark Sky Preserve known for stargazing, with the Jasper Dark Sky festival taking place at the end of each train season in late October. Cruise on the glacial waters of Maligne Lake, explore rugged hiking trails, and enjoy some of the best outdoor recreation in the Canadian Rockies.

Rainforest to Gold Rush
For those that want to delve further into Western Canada’s history and diverse landscapes, there’s the three-day Rainforest to Gold Rush route. This route takes a northerly path between Vancouver and Jasper, uncovering the stories of those seeking their fortune in the Cariboo Gold Rush.

This train route boasts the most trestle bridges, making it a favourite with rail fans. Climb through rainforest into the alpine alongside the southern fjord of Howe Sound, pass the deep turquoise waters of Seton and Anderson lakes, and travel along the desert-like Cariboo Plateau.
Then you’ll cross the historic Cottonwood River Bridge, and take in the larger-than-life Mount Robson. With two of Western Canada’s best outdoor adventure hubs on this train journey, Whistler and Jasper, this rail route is the perfect fit for those want to see and do all they can in the wilderness.
Discover the US Southwest with Canyon Spirit
On Canyon Spirit, you’ll embark on a rail journey through the iconic vistas of the Southwest. They only travel during the day, which means you can explore expansive desert canyons and endless red rock formation millennia in the making without missing a moment.

Start Planning Your Rail Journey of a Lifetime
Where to Start
With so many options, it can be hard to know where to start. Some things to ask yourself include:
- Experience: each train has different onboard experiences. Do you want the Signature (Silver) service? Or would you like to upgrade to the Premier (Gold) service?
- Season: when would you like to visit the Rockies? With itineraries from April to November, each season has something new to offer guests.
- Route: do you prefer history or wildlife? Would you like a shorter 2-day journey or a multi-day journey? Maybe even round trip!
- Packages: each package has curated hotel accommodations for overnight stays. Which hotel would you like to stay in?
- Excursions: what would you like to do during your off-train time? You can add on day tours, extended stays, and sightseeing activities from trusted travel partners to experience even more of the Rockies and make the most of your rail journey.
